What are the worst home improvements that could devalue my home?
Some of the worst home improvements to undertake when trying to increase the value of your property are a swimming pool, interior décor, shoddy workmanship.
The UK has become a nations of house proud homeowners over recent years, and those lucky enough to own their own home are usually keen to make improvements to improve the appearance, practicality, and value of the property.
However, it is important to remember that there are home improvements that will really add to the look and value of your property, and then there are home improvements that may end up devaluing your property. Some of these include:
- Inappropriate window replacement on period properties
- Adding third or fourth bathroom
- Decoration to suit personal tastes
Avoiding improvements that could devalue your property
When you carry out home improvements the aim is usually to improve the look of the home, to increase practicality, and most importantly to add value to the property.
Home improvements can be very costly indeed, and the last thing you want to do is spend thousand of pounds on what you think is home improvements only to find that they have added no value to your home – or worse still to find that they have actually knocked down the value and saleability of your property.
Replacement windows can improve the saleability and value of your property – but it does depend on the type of property that you have. For instance, if you have a period property having modern double glazed windows fitted will not only look odd but could knock down the value of your home.
Likewise having additional bathrooms fitted if you already have two could be a pointless venture if you aim to improve the value of your home.
Another type of home improvement that could prove fruitless when it comes to improving the saleability and value of your home is internal decoration.
The décor of a property is a very personal thing, and what might seem like a great look to you may actually put other people off or lead to them putting in a lower bid for your home if you decide to sell because of the work that they will have to put in to get it changed to their own taste.
You should also make sure that any work you do have done on your home are up to scratch and of high standards, because there is nothing that will decrease the value and saleability of your home more than shoddy workmanship.
If you are not confident at home improvement projects always make sure that you get someone qualified and experienced to do the work for you.
